you're not familiar with words construction right? I mean, subject - verb - predicate? Past, Present and future? I don't know what are these in Japanese. I'll try to research.

Verb - action words (ex. fly, dance, eat,type, surf, sing etc.)

Let's start with the basic

Where can you use "d" and "ed" in a word?

 you add a word when it happen in the past or the action has been performed.

In situation: 

What did you do last night?

I listened to my favorite songs. 

I went to cinema with my friends and watched movie.

To make an action word ending in consonant(b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,v,w,x,y,z) into its past form you will add ed and add d in words ending in vowels(a, e, i, o , u).

ex. (consonant)

Present: I will listen to my favorite song today.

Past: I listened to my favorite song today.

* as you noticed the word listen was changed into listened.

ex. (vowels)

Present: I am going to dance at the club with my friends.

Past: I danced at the club with my friends.

* I added d in the word dance to make it in past form.

So the word "excelled" - it's happening, it's not in the past. 

ex. During our exams, I was the only one who excelled in cheating.

(this means, I excelled only that day - its not happening in the present anymore - its passed already)

ex. I wasn't gifted in singing, but I excel in sports. (present form)
