Thoughts on Iljimae’s Ending

Monday, July 28, 2008sevenses
I was going to write out all my thoughts on the ending of Iljimae, but then life intervened. Anyway, I sit here with sore muscles to give you my take on what happened and why – disclaimer to tell you that you may not agree with or like what I say, but I am basing it on what happened.
In short, Iljimae is alive; Eun Chae just returned from exile in Jeju with her dad; Bong Soon is wandering around the country; Dani and Kyum’s mother are raising Ketong together with Yong visiting every now and then; the rest of the neighbourhood, which includes Eun Chae’s servant, helps when they can – but Iljimae goes deep underground to avoid getting people he cares about into trouble; Shi Hoo teaches kids martial arts and is happy; Daeshi found his dad. Also, the king is crazy.
When we come to the end, Iljimae is starting up his stealing again.
It’s too bad they didn’t have enough time to film the ending fully – according to the PD, they were filming the last episode on the day it was airing, and had no choice but to supplement the end with scenes from episode one. Aww.
First, who is Ketong?
Well, easiest question first. Ketong is the child of Dani and Swe Dol (R.I.P.). Remember when Swe Dol nearly named Yong ‘Ketong’ instead? Dani glared him down. In her beloved husband’s memory, she gives her child a name he’d chosen for another son that he gave his life for. He says he’s five because the Koreans count age starting from 1, not 0. He’s missing a front teeth not because the writers didn’t take science in high school, but because he’s probably old enough to be losing baby teeth now.
How do we know Yong is at least visiting his two mommies?
One word: Ketong. Honestly, this kid gives it away in so many ways. Living with two women, I think it would be very hard for a four-year-old to develop such outrageous mannerisms unless he had someone he admired to copy from. When Bong Soon mentioned ‘Yong’, he showed that he was familiar with someone named Yong, which might just have been his mothers telling him about his older brother. However, that doesn’t account for his slip with the random bystander at Daeshi’s performance troupe – he actually says he couldn’t memorize his version of what happened to Iljimae, but why would he need to, unless he’s covering up for Yong, in collusion with the adults? Also, his more accurate knowledge of Iljimae’s activities (to the annoyance of the shoemaker’s dad) indicates that someone’s been showing off his exploits.
By extension, Shim Deok, Daeshi, the shoemaker, Eun Chae’s servant, the mafia dude, Eun Chae’s servant’s dad all know Yong’s alive. (Awkward moments give them away.) They actually knew who the real Iljimae was, so if something happened to him, they would know the truth too. The only reason they would spread such outrageous rumours would be if they knew they were lying. And the only reason that fits would be Yong’s desire to make sure people around him weren’t being hurt for knowing who he is.
Who are the shoes for?
According to the director/producer, one pair is for Kunghe, and another pair is for Iljimae. So we know our dude is probably living on the island with Kunghe, with the blessing of Shim Deok (except when the gisaeng, Myeong something, comes over). The shoes aren’t for Bong Soon, unfortunately, because if you noticed, Kunghe has a pair that are exactly like the ones the shoemaker delivered this time but Bong Soon has shoes made of straw, customary of travelers at that time.
Which leads us to the topic of Bong Soon… what happened to her?
From her clothes, she’s dressed as a boy, and a traveler, by her shoes. She was probably unable to resolve her issues with Kunghe in the end and opted for wandering around and not seeing him. Remember when she was about to stab Kunghe? She apologized that she would not be able to go with Yong to wherever he was going to take her. I’m guessing she knew she couldn’t stay near Kunghe and gave Yong up too, especially as he was in love with someone else. I feel so bad. Where is our cheerful happy girl?
Dani’s expression upon meeting her suggest that they haven’t seen each other in a while. Furthermore, Dani’s really odd expression indicates that Bong Soon probably doesn’t know Yong is alive. Sadly, she isn’t reconciled with Kunghe either, or they would have shown that, or at least given hints.
Why does Shi Hoo say that not giving up the proof would protect those his brother wants to protect?
Probably Shi Hoo has as much faith in his government as I do in mine, and knows that handing over the proof will mean his death and everyone else’s, if not at the crazy king’s hand, then at the hand of some unscrupulous noble. Thus, having it keeps him safe, and it gives Yong the freedom to keep being Iljimae. (Imagine the most optimistic outcome, where he’s recognized as a noble, how much trouble he would have being Iljimae. Besides, we know his father’s name isn’t cleared because the king is nervous over not having kept his promise.)
Does Eun Chae know who Iljimae is?
Yes. Even as Yong. Why? Besides the whole thing in 19 when she sensed something about Yong, when her servant mentions her husband’s first love, Eun Chae is reminded of her own first love, and she doesn’t ask about Iljimae, she asks about ‘that child’, who is Yong. When her servant is slow to come up with a response, Eun Chae shows signs of worry. Later, she goes to the tree and recalls Kyum in the same time as she does Yong. I’d say that’s enough proof for us. Unfortunately, I think at this point Eun Chae believes Iljimae is dead, though with his latest raid on the palace, she won’t think that for long.
Finally, the big question, is Iljimae alive?
YES YES YES!
Besides the PD saying that Iljimae was slashed by his own sword and fell down due to the force of the blow, and that Kunghe’s order has a pair of shoes for him, the beginning and end quite obviously show he is alive. Just as Hong Gil Dong unequivocally indicated their main characters’ deaths, Iljimae shows him in action once more.
I think I’m still going to write my own version though…

Thanks! Really wish that one pair was for Bong Soon. So sad for Kunghe…
Actually, makes a lot of sense that both Kunghe and Yongee are living in secrecy on the island since both identities were exposed.
As for Shi Hoo, considering his lack of good sportsmanship in attacking someone’s back and his ruthlessness in killing all in his path, should he be teaching young ones?!
Looking forward to your rewrites. The ending to me was a complete cop-out! Hardly fitting for such an awesome drama.

I think Sevenses has missed something about Bong Soon again. In the last episodes, Bong Soon did mention that she wanted to wait for Yonghe to come back in his place. And what I remember I saw that she was wearing a man’s cloth shoe (there is a full scene while she was walking towards Yong’s 2 mums) but not the straw shoe as what Sevenses has mentioned. Eunchae was only suspicious but not really sure that Yonghe is Iljimae. Did the PD really mention that one pair of shoe is Kunghe’s and the other pair of shoe is Yonghe? But in Baidu’s forum, someone mentioned that the PD only said that one pair of shoe was for Yonghe but never said that the other pair of shoe belongs to Kunghe or Bong Soon. Many fans believe that Iljimae and Eunchae will be together eventually but in fact that Iljimae ws trying to avoid Eunchae and Bong Soon ‘cos he will not want to hurt both of them.

Straw shoes should not be black in colour and we could see from the scene that the men who are wearing straw shoes are either white or beige in colour.
And all the times, Bong Soon is wearing black shoes till the last episode, her shoes are black too.

    Thanks a lot!
Can you tell me why Bong Soon is mad at Konghe??? I kind of skipped a couple of parts on the last episode… Didn’t he saved her? They both jumped together on the cliff.
It was really sad to see her so depressed and her hair and everything was just so messed up, she looked really bad and she was still limping…
So in the end Eun Chae will end up with Iljimae right??? YAY! In the beginning I thought that Iljimae is going to end up with Bong Soon because usually the one who like a loser type-ish or something gets the guy… Depending on the drama sometimes the innocent girl gets the guy versus a really mean girl. lol

Well, Bong Soon’s relationship with Kunghe is kind of complicated. He raised her, but he also killed her family. She doesn’t want to kill him, so I guess she settled for wandering around seeking inner peace.
As for who he ends up with, no one knows. Possibly not even the director himself…

my take is that iljimae is surely dead, but he now lives on forever in legends and tales of his adventures. as for the last scene where iljimae is again robbing the palace, that is an example of iljimae’s now godly status through the stories of people (the shoemaker in this case); he’s an inspiration to the people through storytelling and even copycats.

ps: Boon Soon didn’t mention about Long’er at all~
Anyway, nice review for the ending. Whether your guesses are true or not, it’s just a story/drama. If it makes you feel better, then well, Long’er is still alive and will meet up with Boon Soon and/or Eun Chae one day in future.
Let’s hope for Iljimae 2 if you want the story to continue =)

Eun Chae knows that Yong is Iljimae and that he is alive. When she returned with her dad and asked her servant about “that kid”, her servant’s father said; “Who? Oh, you mean Yong Ee? He is well.”
She realized that Iljimae is Yong after her dad, being attacked by Iljimae, said to Iljimae: “So you are Lee Son Woo’s son! You are not dead!” Iljimae did not deny it although he did not make any comment either. Eun Chae’s face looked so shocked at that time. As she knew beforehand that Yong is the boy she met when she was a kid (remember she said to her servant that she is glad the little boy is still alive), of course she knew that Iljimae = little boy = Yong.
Personally I think Yong will end up with Eun Chae because she is the one he loves. He does not love Bong Soon, his feelings towards her is grattitude and guilt for causing her brother’s death, which won’t be a good foundation for a happy marriage. If Bon Soon really loves Yong, she will give him up so he can go to Eun Chae, and I think she has given up on him as she knew he does not love her. Both Yong and Eun Chae like to go to the plum tree, one day they will meet again there.
    Just my thoughts…

i think he chose another flower because the titus represented his quest to revenge his father, now that he has found out the truth and chooses to let go of his past, his new quest is to bring justice to the country, symbolized by another flower~

I, too, believe that Iljimae is still alive (and it has to be his half-brother Shi-Hoo who saves him). In the last scene of 4 yrs later, there is an acrobat performing; that’s Iljimae. One clear clue that Iljimae is still alive is the way Ketong talks; that’s exactly the way Yong talks as “Yong.” And, where else if not from Yong could Ketong have picked up that mannerism? Also, he and Eun-chae will get together now that she’s returned. And, yes, she already knows that “the little boy,” Yong and Iljimae = same person. It’s sad that BoonSong has to let go of her love for Yong/Iljimae. She is a realist and knows that Yong is of noble birth and she of peasant stock … therefore, no marriage for them. As for the “shoes” … the 2nd pair is for BoonSong, which means that she and her adoptive dad have gotten back together and are living as “hermits.”
One last word … although I enjoyed this drama, it does not compare at all with Dae Jang Geum. Iljimae is too “loose” and not as well written … but, it was based on a comic character.

Yep, I agree with you in almost every point! about some parts I had to think some time before figuring them out but in the end I think I got it all and I really really love the ending!
I only disagree about four things:
    1. I don´t think Dae Shik found his dad; I think the man on the rope is Iljimae. He probably makes his living like that since he cannot work anywhere else after having gone undercover – what better disguise than to impersonate himself and make use of his extraordinary skills in a legal way?^^
    2. I think Bong Soon returned from her travels as soon as she heard about the first Iljimae-like break-in. She really believes in Yong so she was probably always sure that he would survive and had always intended to return to him as soon as he gave her a sign. That´s why the three women look at each other so strangely: they share the knowledge of Yongee having returned as Iljimae (and are not exactly happy to see him in danger yet again^^).
    3. Also, I think Bong Soon mostly forgave her father already (since he risked his life for her and Iljimae) but wasn´t ready to live with him “just like before”. That´s why her father stays close to the city where Bong Soon left him – so she can find him again whenever she is ready.
    4. I don´t think Eun Chae knows that Yongee is Iljimae, but I think she unconsciously suspects it and therefore feels strangely drawn to Yongee. I also don´t think he will ever contact her again; even if she may hear about Iljimae´s return he will let her believe that it is only an imposter. He sees no realistic future for the both of them and doesn´t want to endanger her further. He already decided this when he didn´t let her take off his mask for the second time.

I wonder why director don’t make a special episode? Now, Lee Jun Ki has already attended army, so it would be impossible to make it now, but it’s fine to wait for another 2 years. I think if make season 2, it would be hard but if a special episode which talk about what did happen during the gap of 4 years would be great. Viewers are also more satisfied and not so much confused about the ending. The ending will be clarified, there is no need for guessing. How others thinks about this idea?
I’m having many dreams about Yongee and Bong Soon, but because it’s not clearly, I always feel like there are something missing. I wished Yongee and Bong Soon have many happy moments together. Bong Soon sacrified too much, but her only happy memory is the night before Yongee go to rescue Eun Chae, when Yongee said that he want to take her with him.
On the night Yongee go for rescuing Eun Chae, his words broke my heart, I’m not touching because what he said, but thought that:” How is our poor Bong Soon? What is she mean in his heart? Where is she if his heart belongs to Eun Chae?”, thinking all of that, I cried like mad.
And when Bong Soon decided to sacrify herself for Yongee, at that moment, Yongee was together with Eun Chae, protecting Eun Chae. Honestly speaking, Eun Chae is quietly annoying me during the serie, I just wished she disappear for Bong Soon’s sake. I skipped all the part that having Eun Chae in it, and keep playing again again parts that Bong Soon and Youngee together. But still, it’s not enough to make me full.
Ah, Bong Soon is the most pitiful girl in Iijimae, she always get wounds because of others, and broken heart because of Yongee. She deserves to receive much much more than that, much more love from Yongee. What the hell why Eun Chae did not be crashed for a bit, but receive special love from Yongee, why my poor Bong Soon…? Director, please, when Lee Jun Ki back, make a special episode, please, please, please, please…
One more thing, I think the reason for Yongee love Eun Chae at the first place is because of their childhood encounter. Bong Soon as well, she also had an important part on Yong’s past. The only difference is that he recognised Eun Chae first, and because the encounter between Bong Soon and him was award, so they end up bark to each other all the time. But, if u watch closely, beside Eun Chae, Bong Soon also has special meaning to Yongee, it’s just that he did not recognise that.
By anyway, just my thinking, i don’t mean to start a war with Eun Chae’s fan, but I’m absolutely not support Eun Chae and Yongee. Eventhough Yongee love Eun Chae, but he is not just because of gratitude and guilty toward Bong Soon. Honestly, during the show, eventhough we know clearly that Bong Soon love Yongee (even he’s good for nothing),but Yong did not aware of that. And the scene below titis tree, she just said that because of the past, she is nice to him, but she did not say that she loves him. What i means here is Yongee, if he just because of gratitude and guilty, he can promise taking care of her as a sister, but what he meaned was as a lover, asked her wait for him.
For Eun Chae, before Iijimae appear, she showed her concern to Shi Hoo, but later, she loved Iijimae. She is not deserve to receive love, when she can’t even recognise Yongee=Iijimae, eventhough she saw Iijimae so many times. Bong Soon love Yongee for who he is eventhough he is good for nothing in other eyes, but Eun Chae, who she love was cool-Iijimae who is always appear with the mask, but not the Yongee who is lived and existed as he really is. Hey, I nagged too much again.
About the two shoes, if u say 1 for Yong and another one for Konghe, it’s not making sense, we see it clearly there is one small size shoes, and one large size, if the other pair means for Konghe, it should be same (or similar) in size. And it’s also not make sense if say that Konghe would ignore his daughter alone, Yongee as well. Even if u believe that Yong absolutely not love Bong Soon, it’s still not make sense for him ignore her with disability. But again, I do strongly believe that, Yong toward Bong Soon, eventhoung she is not his first love, but still, he do love her. Remember when Yan Soon died, eventhough Yongee said that he’ll ignore Bong Soon do whatever she want, but actually, he stayed there with her whole night (hint: he did not go back home that day, so that his dad so worried) until the next day, when there are more people joined her, then he left with relieved.
I wrote too much again. Those who love Bong Soon over Eun Chae, pls support my thinking. I watched this show until the end because Lee Jun Ki was there, and also because belief that he will have happy ending with Bong Soon. The ending was so confused, but because Yongee is not together with Eun Chae, so I’m kind of convincing myself “that’s alright enough as long as he’s not with that girl(Eun Chae)”.

sr, this is just a copy comment from someone who also have the same thinking as me:
“I think this drama was awesome. It made me cry, laugh, get angry and everything. At the end of every episode I couldn’t wait to watch the next one.
By the way, I don’t get why some people thought the boy at the end was Iljimae and Eun Chae’s son. That’s so wrong. Really. The boy even say that he didn’t have a tooth because he was like his father. So, do you know who lost a tooth through the series? Right! Yong-ee’s adoptive father. Now, the boy was with Yong-ee’s adoptive mother and called her mother, what can we all conclude? Yes! The boy at the end was actually the son of Yong-ee’s adoptive parents; Yong-ee’s little brother.
You know, Iljimae/Eun-Chae love story wasn’t that good to me. I liked Yong-ee/Bong Soon story better. She truly loved him; and her story was so touching.
About the ending, the way I see it, there are only two ways: he died and the scene of the beginning/ending, was just the legend that went on even with him dead. However, what I want to believe is that he is alive. He went to train/live in the mountains, and then returned four years later to remind the king of his promise to leave the throne.
I think that if Yong-ee is alive, he wouldn’t leave Bong Soon alone. After all, he promised her to this time not let go of her hand (he was the kind of man that kept his promises and he was so happy when he realized she was alive), and so she was waiting for him. Moreover, she’s sacrificed a lot for him (she couldn’t walk well and lost her status as a woman after nearly dying for him).
True, he loved Eun-Chae, but when he burned her handkerchief, he firmly decided to let her go. Even after he went to save her, he never intend to let her know who he really was. Eun-Chae just loved what Iljimae represented and the memory of a young first love (she too soon started treating bad Yong-ee).
At the other hand, Bong-Soon felt in love with Yong-ee, was thankful to Geum and admired Iljimae; and then, she knew and loved all of him. Her love for him was similar to the love of Yong-ee’s adoptive father for Danee, and you know, at the end, in Danee’s heart was only him.
Anyway, I want to believe Bong-Soon was living in the mountains along with Yong-ee and her adoptive father. She went to the town after four years that’s why she didn’t know the son of Danee, but she did know Yong-ee’s birth mother.
Thank you for read my rambling.”

Ah, I just rewatched the final episode of the Iijimae, I think that Yong really is not come to see his mothers, and he is living with Bong Soon. Because he of course don’t want to bring dangerous for them. Moreover, if he take them with him, they may have struggled…,so it’s also natural for them to live in that village.
About the awkward encounter b/w Bong Soon and his mothers, I thinks because Danee haven’t seen her since when she sacrified herself for Yongee, so see her is kind of make Danee don’t know how to react (remember that they need to cover for Yongee). If everyone see Yongee’s biological mother react when she see Bong Soon, u’ll have felling like this girl must have some mean for that lady. Because actually, Yong’s biological mother did not see Bong Soon before, but I think she know that Yongee now live with Bong Soon. Therefore when Dannee call out Bong Soon, Yong’s mother react so emotionally.

I honestly don´t understand why there are so many different theories about the ending… in my opinion, it was not an open ending at all. if you think about it and maybe even rewatch one or the other scene, don´t you find that as a viewer you only have to arrange the pieces of a perfect puzzle? In the end, everything fits perfectly; no holes left and only one place for every puzzle-piece…
Of course no one can know what will happen to Yongee and his friends in the future – maybe a monster-dragon will come along and devour the whole village xD – but that´s about it^^
