'Romantic Island'

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

The Christmas season boasts many holiday movies with plots about romance,Family Matters and even Santa and his elves. "Romantic Island" can be added to the love story category, as four young characters leave their tiring everyday lives, arrive at one of the most beautiful islands on earth and each start to discover new sides of themselves.

Jae-hyuk, played by deep voiced Lee Seon-gyoon, is a CEO but faces a layoff by the board of directors due to radical decisions and his straightforward personality. When informed of the death of his father, who left him to live with his Filipino wife and daughter, he doesn't flinch and leaves for the island to bid his father farewell.

Meanwhile, Su-jin, played by the bubbly Lee Soo-kyeong, flies to Boracay to escape her poor family and miserable workplace. She meets the seemingly rich Jae-hyuk and resolves to fix his sour attitude.

Jeong-hwan, played by model-turned actor Lee Min-ki, is an unemployed fellow looking for fun and Ga-young, played by singer-turned-actress Eugene (Yoo Jin), is popular singer. The two immediately bond, with Jeong-hwan simply honored to be with a famous singer and Ga-young frantically trying to get away from her hectic schedule. The story is somewhat similar to "Notting Hill", from the glamorous star to the timid yet happy young man.

There is actually another couple that will touch the heart of viewers: the dying husband and clueless wife. He's determined to kill himself, and almost succeeds, only to realize the true meaning of life and love through his loving wife.

"Romantic Island" is a trendy and romantic drama. It has all the right elements of: beautiful scenery, four young talented actors along with veteran co-stars and interesting love stories. But unlike dramas that take place over several episodes, a movie needs a solid plot that can hold onto viewers' attention, and "Romantic Island" falls a bit short.

The couples do offer a common theme of love changing everything for the worst, even the best situations, and the theme is executed quite successfully through three different storylines early on.

The couples are sweet and fun to watch and the actors are persuasive, but as the tightly packaged themes start to unravel, they lose their spark and tension.

Still, the sunsets, palm trees and beaches are more than enough to make viewers want to pack their bags and head straight there, and the small incidents with the three couples are the same as many would have hoped for in their dreams of a paradise getaway.

If you are looking for a light romantic drama with no serious twists or turns, "Romantic Island" will be perfect for you.

In theaters. 105 minutes. 15 and over. Distributed by Silver Spoon.

Remember that Korean movie that was shot in Boracay in February early this year? It stars former SES member Eugene (Kim), Lee Seon Gyun, Lee Min Gi and Lee Su Gyeong among others. It was originally titled “Feel So Good” and was earlier reported to be released in May.

I thought that that movie has been relegated to the freezer but alas, it was reported last week that it will finally be shown on December 24 in Korea. It has also been renamed “Romantic Island,” which IMO suits the movie better.

The new playdate is good since December 25 is a holiday in Korea. Hopefully, couples will march to the multiplexes to watch the film (and book the earliest flights to Boracay — don’t forget the swimsuits!)

PLOT:
A poor but vivacious lady, Soo-Jin (Su-kyeong Lee) takes a vacation to an exotic island for the first time, totally free from work and her family. A rich but cold-hearted gentleman, Jae-Hyuk (Seon-gyun Lee), secretly visits the island for his estranged fathers funeral. Jae-Hyuk bumps into Soo-Jin at a hotel and attracted by her lively spirit, Jae-Hyuk asks her to be his tour guide during his stay on the island.

A famous idol star, Ga-Young (Eugene), is stressed out from her hard schedules and takes an impulsive vacation. A hopeless clerk, Jung-Hwan (Min-gi Lee), gets a free ticket to the island from his friend. Spoiled, Ga-Young sees Jung-Hwan standing alone at the airport and asks him to carry her bag and to take her to the hotel. Mr. nice guy, Jung-Hwan cant turn her down and he becomes her companion to the island.

A father and husband, Joong-Sik and his wife, Yoon-Suk, take their very first trip abroad to the island. In the romantic island, Joong-Sik tries to make his wife the perfect vacation, presenting an unforgettable memory with him for the last time.

If I were knew that they went here in the Philippines, I will go there and have some fun with these korean actors and of course the famous people here.......

Romantic Island Korean Movie - setting philippines

Having watched a lot of heavy films lately, I did have a craving for something lightweight and fun. The South Korean movie “Romantic Island” fortunately hit the spot just right. The film features three couples that go the Philippines for fun and there are a few surprises thrown in along the way. “Romantic Island” does have the look of a television drama and at times goes down the melo-drama road familiar with TV dramas, but fortunately those melo-dramatic moments makes up only a tiny portion of the film. If you don’t have time to get away, watching “Romantic Island” will at least give you a temporal feeling of excitement.

In “Romantic Island” three couples pair off after arriving in Manila, Philippines.

The first couple are a middle-aged husband & wife tandem that are taking their first ever trip overseas. The husband (played by Mun-shik Lee) has never taken his wife anywhere before, but he has reasons for taking her on their first trip. The husband has a brain tumor and he plans to end his life in the Philippines for insurance money.

Convenience store clerk Jung-hwan (Min-gi Lee) is offered a free ticket to the Philippines by a friend. Although Jung-hwan is broke he is more than happy to go, especially to forget his ex-girlfriend who dumped him because of his inability to find a better paying job. At the Manila airport, Jung-hwan is stunned when famous Korean pop singer Ga-young Yu (played by Eugene) approaches him to use his cellphone. For Ga-young, coming to the Philippines is a spur of the moment decision to get away from the pressures of making her next album.

Soo-Jin used her entire savings to come to the Philippines Her home life is a mess and she is in part running away from her family. At her hotel in Manila, she encounters a fellow Korean named Jae-Hyuk (Seon-gyun Lee). Jae-hyuk is a successful businessman that came to the Philippines for family matters. His long estranged father, who re-married in Manila, has passed away. Soo-jin accompanies Jae-hyuk to meet his step-sister.

So what’s to like about “Romantic Island” you ask? Well that exuberant feeling of taking your first overseas trip is palatable throughout the film. The movie also does a good job of bringing out the flavor of the Philippines island. The characters are all likable, especially the younger couples. Someone that stood-out was Su-kyeong Lee who played Soo-jin aka Alice. Although I have never noticed her before (she played the sister in serial killer film “Rainbow Eyes), I will make a note of her as she brought out a whole lot of perky charm to the screen. There’s also model turned actor Min-gi Lee (”A Good Day to Have an Affair”) turning in another on the money performance as the star struck love interest of Eugene.

A few scenes towards the end of the film (involving each couple’s deepest problems) does drag the film down a notch. As stated earlier, those scenes are brief and doesn’t place a complete damper on the film itself. There’s also a surprisingly affective sub-plot involving kids hired to murder one of the Korean vacationers.

“Romantic Island” will most likely appeal to teens and fans of Korean romantic-comedies in general. The multiple storylines will make you think of past Korean films like “My Lovely Week” and “Sad Movie,” with “Romantic Island” landing in-between the superior “My Lovely Week” and the disappointing “Sad Movie.” If anything else, “Romantic Island” provides 90 minutes of lively escapism … something to savor when your longing to pack your suitcase but don’t have an itinerary.

Title: 사랑가 (Love ver.)

Singer:

it seems as though the accumulated time is being greedy
seeing as it hurts more today than yesterday.. oh girl
it was after i realized that i couldnt be totally happy with that smile towards me, that there was nothing special, baby

what if.. it seems like youre going to love me
because it seems like youre going to come to me if i wait just a little..
with these anticipations, i cant leave you
even though i know that as time accumulates, it becomes pain.. oh girl

even though i wanted to believe that that smile was just for me
it probably isnt, right? but still.. just maybe

what if.. i met you first.. no, if i didnt know you
these thoughts are useless..
for im already living in the deeply set times of you

even though love increases as much as times weight, even though pain is heavy
still, i feel like youll love me
because it seems like youre going to come to me if i wait just a little..
with these anticipations, i cant leave you
even though i know that the accumulated time has made today.. oh girl

Who Are You? (aka: Who R U) Korean Movie

Director Choi Ho(a)'s modern romance, Who Are You?, tries to capture the essence of the N (Network) generation, Korea's young people who grew up with e-mail, instant messaging, cell phones, and the Internet in one of the most wired nations of the world. The film centers on an Internet game called ``Who Are You" a sort of ultimate dating game where players pick partners and interact in a simulation of the real world. Commercial film star Lee Na-young makes her transition to the big screen as In-ju, an aquarium diver and former swimming champion who is a beta tester for the game. Hyung-tae (Jo Seung-Wu), a game programmer who has devoted the last two years of his life to launching the game, becomes interested in her after conducting interviews of beta testers. He finds out her game identity and picks her as a partner in the game. In-ju and Hyung-tae begin interacting in two different worlds: modern day Seoul, where they both work in the famous 63-story building of Korea Life Insurance in Youido, and the game's virtual world. Under the identities, ``Mello" and ``Byulee" they have late night chats while interacting in a simulation of the real world that the game creates, where they can go for virtual car rides and frequent actual areas of Seoul.

While they seem to connect on a deeper level in the game, their real life interactions are less successful. Hyung-tae must eventually reveal that he and Mello are one and the same, as In-ju is only interested in his cyber counterpart. This, of course, leads to the movie's central question of identity. As far as romance movies go, the plot is nothing new. The role of new technology in the realm of dating is a subject that was explored in 1995's Contact, with actor Han Seok-Gyu and actress Jeon Do-Yeon, and again in the 1998 Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks film ``You've Got Mail." ``Who Are You" is simply the latest version, a technological update of this genre. However, as a snapshot of today's youth, this film is highly relevant and asks some hard questions. In one scene, Hyung-tae outlines the Seoul skyline with his fingers and says that from that angle, it looks like a scene from a game, an interesting commentary on the increasingly blurred line between the real world and virtual reality. The film is, moreover, quite entertaining. Lee Na-Yeong plays In-ju with the right amount of detached cool, which works well with Hyung-tae's boyish charm. The rest of the cast is likeable if not highly memorable, and the plot is engaging despite its predictability.

Hyungtae is a game programmer working on the ultimate online dating game. Working 24/7 on the 30th floor of the tallest building in Seoul, the company's future-and whether it sinks to the bottom-depends on the success of the game. Inju, a former champion swimmer, works on the bottom floor at the SeaWorld aquarium, feeding the fishes and seals. But things are not going well. Hyungtae's company is running out of money, he desperately needs sleep, and a beta-test player with the login name "Byulee" has declared that she hates the game. As for Inju, she's working hard to perform as a mermaid but having trouble holding her breath.

Hyungtae finds out that "Byulee" works in the same building and he sets out to make "Byulee" fall in love with his game and his online character "Mello." "Byulee" is in real life Inju, and when Hyungtae meets Inju, he soon finds that the game is becoming more real than he imagined possible. And for Inju, she finds in "Mello" a perfect partner, but is also attracted to Hyungtae. When and where does the game end and love begin?
